AI VIDEO DIRECTOR FOR HIRE

Matthew Cooper AI video Director

I’m Matthew Cooper, a BAFTA shortlisted scriptwriter and director, with over 200 hours of TV to my name, across all the UK broadcast networks (EastEnders for the BBC, Emmerdale for ITV, Hollyoaks for CH4 and Family Affairs for CH5) in a career that has spanned 25+ years.

As a director I’ve completed five feature films (4 microbudget horror films released to rave reviews) and Sober, a hilarious comedy drama starring Dean Smith (Waterloo Road/Still Open All Hours) and Tom Gibbons (Funny Cow/The Archers) which will debut on Amazon Prime in 2025.

I’m also an early adopter of AI video, and AI video directing and filmmaking.

I’ve been using AI video tools like Runway, Pika, Luma, LTX Studio and Minimax for nearly two years now.

My main use for this has been narrative i.e. telling a story. I don’t make trailers or music videos or release test reels or kit bashing video or random standalone kit tests.

I tell stories for a living – and I use whatever tools I can to best realise the storytelling process. In some cases AI generative video is the best tool to use for narrative film and video.

I’m also a BAFTA shortlisted scriptwriter – and while AI can be used to generate ideas, and even write full scripts -the actual final scripts THAT I WORK from, must be HUMAN, and have fully human input in all parts, this is very important, as currently AI can only copy emotion, and only copy human traits, and I want the stories that I work on to be 100 authentically human in writing (not a photocopy or plastic copied and manufactured emotion).

A good example of my use of AI GENERATIVE VIDEO as a tool is the feature film below, which was shot based on my script (an adaptation of a famous horror story) and was filmed in real locations with real life actors (no AI human, or metahumans). The whole film has a very human feel – but we used AI GENERATIVE VIDEO as a way to replace expensive CGI shots, or time consuming stop motion or practical effects (the whole feature film was completed from a budget of less than £2,000 which included the actors, travel costs, and 3 day location shoot as well as the AI generative video elements and the AI generated score).

In the film below, AI GENERATIVE video is used impressively (and cheaply) to create creature feature style shots (the film is essentially a monster movie) and we used AI text to video and image to video to essentially replace the use of CGI.

Currently, AI GENERATIVE VIDEO is best used as a replacement to expensive CGI – its not currently at a stage where it can be used as a replacement of live action – but only as something (a tool) to enhance real actors and real locations and real performances. That is, unless you’re working in animation where AI tools are getting closer to being able to produce something PIXAR would be proud of.

I’ve come to this conclusion after two years spent experimenting with AI generative video (since the tools first came out) and while I have made some full GEN VID short films (a couple of which can be seen below), I wouldn’t recommend brands, or organisations, or even film producers rely solely on AI to make a movie / advert / or TV show (unless you want a CGI / PIXAR style feel to the show).

Currently, as of today (24/01/25) the tools aren’t good enough to replace actors, or writers or proper locations, BUT they are good enough to enhance, and improve films and visual media and in some cases remove the need for expensive CGI altogether (which I believe currently is the best use case – as AI generative video is cheaper and good enough currently to removed almost the whole need for any CGI).

My feeling is that AI GEN video, works best, when its invisible – like many other filmmaking tools, you cannot let the audience see behind the curtain, and the audience won’t be able to suspend disbelief if they see something is obviously AI generated. Like an autotuned singer – the audiences can tell when you’ve hit a bum note.

AI gen video has made many things possible, the impossible possible – but that doesn’t mean any of that is interesting.

Audiences still respond to the same storytelling skills they always have – whatever the tools.

So, as a director / writer and filmmaker – and as an AI VIDEO DIRECTOR FOR HIRE I welcome and want to use AI – I do this, with a focus on storytelling, and making sure whatever tools are used that the audience can suspend disbelief – that’s an essential element of any film or TV show or narrative story – and its even more important when using AI Generative video tools as part of the process.

Here, below is my micro budget horror film – H.P. Lovecraft’s the Shadow Over Innsmouth which uses extensive AI Generative Video to replace CGI.

I tell stories with AI, that’s my job. Stories can be adverts, training videos, social media videos, documentaries, or more traditional film and TV formats.

I’m an expert in screen story telling – the art of SHOW and NOT TELL – and that’s what I use AI video for (along with all the other filmmaking tools available to best tell a story in the correct way).
